Genealogy "Love of the Hunt"

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday, k today I am going to say something u wont believe.    But, when searching digital databases ignore the surname.   That's right, ignore the surname.    Scanning given names and other criteria in search forms results in success.   sometimes the surname is illegible, oddly spelled or incorrectly indexed.   U can sometimes even find married daughters, remarried widows, etc.....Try it and let me know your success.   Cant wait to hear from u.   cg

Thursday, June 23, 2011  "Expand ur search area"   Do not limit ur geographical area when searching.   Even tho automobiles were  not in the picture in r ancestor's time, it is not uncommon for relatives 2 attend church 20 miles away.    Meeting someone (spouse) 2-3 counties away happened.   Remember, early settlements were small and ministers served several congregations around the different counties.  The records for the church for many counties may be found all together.  cg

Genealogy "Love of the Hunt"

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 - Its hump day and the weekend trip is slowly coming upon us.   Today's talk is about "expanding our search area"  Do not limit ur geographical area when searching.   Even tho autos were not in the picture in our ancestors time, it is not uncommon for relatives to attend church 20 miles away or meet your spouse two to three counties away.   Remember early settlements were thin and ministers serviced several congregations  in a wide region.   The church records may all be found together.   cg

Genealogy "Love of the Hunt"

Tuesday, June 21, 2011  Happy Day fellow hunters.   Are u stuck today?   Frustrated?  need a little nudge?   Then I have a great idea!   Sit down and write out all the information you have gathered in a narrative.   Tell a story about your ancestors.   Often by writing a story, citing sources, you will find a gap in your research.   Read the narrative over and you should be able to break through the wall.   Maybe u forgot to check the different spellings of the name?   Perhaps u searched the wrong time period?   Actually, u might have all the information u need.   All it takes is putting it together.   cg

Genealogy "Searching the databases"

Hello fellow hunters, it is Wednesday again working toward the weekend...Do u have anything planned for this weekend like going to cemeteries, visiting older relatives?  Let me know, I would love to know and maybe help u with some pointers.   Today, Newspapers (historical) lets u search but uses OCR (optical character recognition)  What is that u say?  U type a keyword like Robert Glasgow, and it looks for Robert and Glasgow which of course is going to bring up thousands of unnecessary information and is very unreliable.  If u search twice it will bring up different information each time.   If u r looking for a death notice use the date and then search within.   Try putting the whole name in parenthesis and hopefully it will bring up only the Robert Glasgow's u need.  Just a tip, the library in your town might have access to early historical newspapers.   Try.    Again, let me know how u make out.   cg

Genealogy "Searching the databases"

Hello fellow hunters!  Have you ever searched the census and said, what does that say?   You just cant read the short hand of early record keepers.   They used some obvious shorthand, like jno = john.   Does that make sense?  Thos = Thomas.   After 30 years of reading the censusus, I am still learning.   Good luck hunters....Have you come across any strange appreviations, let me know.    cg

Genealogy "Searching the databases"

Hello Friday.....Weekend is here!!  Searching multiple databases at one time can bring you too many results that you have to sift thru.   Best policy is to know exactly what you want to search and search that database specifically.  If, after doing that, you want to run a search through all the databases, you can.   But, be aware of results and don't become overwhelmed.  Have a gr8 weekend see ya all on Monday.....comment on how searching the databases went!  cg

Genealogy "Searching the Internet downfalls"

Indexes and Images - So its thursday, already, heading for the weekend...When you get search results and it includes an index make sure you also check the original.  The index is only as good as the data operator.  For example, a L could be taken for a T, etc....Also, there is more information on the original than the index.  Don's miss out on important information.   Slow down, don't be in a hurry.  cg   Keep cool

Genealogy "Searching the databases"

Hello fellow hunters.   Let move on today to how you search databases.   Always check on the  home menu on how to search.   Doing this first will save u time and frustration.   Don't be in a hurry when searching.  A good number of the databases allow flexibility.   Wild cards, partial names, soundex.
a..Wildcards - what r wildcards?  usually it is a *.   Say for example you have the name Robert Glasgow.  To search using a wildcard would be Robert Glas*.
b..Soundex converter is usually with the census.   Censuses workers had different handwritting and sometimes the people didnt even know how to spell their name.  You can also identify the spelling variations for a given surname.  Example..soundex for glasgow is G420.   Some other names that have that exact soundex is gales, galik, gallehawk, giles, gilhaus, gilkey, gilles.......u get the picture.
c.  Part of the name...example Robert would be rob.  Any comments or questions, bring it on?   cg

Genealogy "Searching the databases"

Its Tuesday, happy day!!  How do we search the databases?  Focus on young children if you can.  The children seem to be more accurate in the databases.  Adults, even in the late 1800's, do not give accurate information.   Any idea why?   Would love to hear your comments on this.   cg

Genealogy "Searching the Internet downfalls"

Hello hunters..... happy Monday.   Are u having trouble getting information out of ur database search?   Best way 2 search databases are:
1..know what ur searching.   Learn on the homepage what the database has to offer 4 u.  R u searching censuses, passenger lists, indexes or property?   Make sure the database covers the area u need before searching.  If you have any questions, please leave comments and I will answer you.   cga

Genealogy FAQ's "Organization"

Legacyfamilytree.com - this is a software that needs to be downloaded onto your computer.  Standard version is free.
Myheritage.com is a internet based software that is free, private and secure.  You start the software by adding your name.   The software is limited to only 250 names (do you have that many in your tree)   Congratulations, if you do.   They do have a premium version that you can pay monthly or yearly.  Please go to myhereitage.com and start organizing your tree.   You can also add pictures, let others access.   Nice feature is you can download pictures from your cell phone (just like facebook)   and really handy when you are out hunting tombstones or  visiting relatives.  I like this software.  No software download on your computer and it has different reports.   Try it out.  cg
