3..Create a chronological timeline of your brick wall ancestor.  You should include every life

event as well as major historical events that may help shed a light on the living situation of your

ancestor.   By doing this step,  you will see gaps in your research.  Get a blank sheet of paper

and write down every year of your brick wall ancestors life and start filling in.

4..Study sideways.   What do I mean by this?  Try tracing the lives of your brick wall ancestors

siblings, cousins, neighbors, in-laws, slave owners, co workers. cga

What are brick walls in the Genealogy world? Are you at one today? As family researchers we all hit a brick wall at one time or another. What is a brick wall? It is a place in our research where we are stuck, can’t go any further, tried everything. What do we do about breaking through that brick wall?
Lets explore a few options:
1.. Write down in story format what you have already learned such as..grandpa was a farmer who lived from ...in such a county and state..he married ..... on ....and had 10 children, get the gist of the story? As you write you will be able to review and organize your work. With this method, you will find holes in your story that you need to do further research on.

More organizations you should join.  The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. (AAHGS) helps to preserve African-American family history, genealogy, and cultural diversity by teaching research techniques and providing  information to the community. Their goal is to promote research, provide resources for historical and genealogical studies, create a network of persons with similar interests, and assist members in documenting their histories.  You can explore this national organization through their website at  www.aahgsatl.org.  The AAHGS has a local chapter that meets at the Georgia National Archives in Morrow, Ga monthly with informative speakers. cga

NGS (National Genealogical Society) is a great organization to join for everyone interested in family research. By being a member of NGS you will have many benefits such as free educational courses, a free quarterly magazine, access to blogs, forms, research resources, discounts in the NGS online store and much more. Rockdale County Genealogical Society is a group devoted to family research and helping others with informative programs monthly. The Society meets on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 3 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, 1275 Flat Shoals Rd, Conyers. Come join in the fun
at their September meeting with Robert Willingham, jr. author of “Deadly Trust” . This book is about the mysterious disappearance of the Nelms Sisters. Deadly Trust, a Southern historical novel, is based on a true story of good versus evil and the efforts made to bring about justice. Mark your calendar for September 9th at 3 pm.  Cga

What organization do u belong to as your family researcher?   It is a great idea to belong to ur local historical society.   Have u checked it out yet?  The society may have information on your relatives.  Historical societies sometimes sponsor Genealogy classes.   They may also need volunteers which, of course, is a valuable experience.   Would love to know if you found ur local Historical Society a great idea?  cga

State Records:  vital records, land grants, state census, militia records, tax lists, archives, journals.

National Records:  censuses, mortality schedules, military records, pension records, passenger lists, immigration records, land records., passports and visa applications.

Libraries:  indexes, printed and misc. genealogies, printed histories, obituary collection/indexes, cemetery records, birth, death, divorce indexes.

Newspapers:  advertisements, announcements, obituaries, births, local, professional and trade.

Home Resources:  family Bible, letters, Interviews, photographs, birth certificates, baby books, prayer books, journals, heirlooms, farm records, medical/health records, memoirs, biographies

County Records:  vital records such as birth, death, marriage; wills, estates, deeds, mortgages, other recorders records, naturalization records.

Town Records and Libraries:  city and county directories, cemetery records, graves, misc. or published histories, newspapers files, tax lists, voter records, public school records. Tomorrow I will continue with the checklist. cga
