Genealogy Bug

In today's busy society and with the way the economy is, Genealogy is the farthest thought from your mind.  Who cares how my ancestors from 100 years ago lived.  I need to survive in today's world.  I need to go to work, take care of my family, worry about whether the car will start, or how my son/daughter are doing in school.  Sometimes, though, we need to take a break from everyday stress and appreciate what we have.   100 years ago cars were new, there were no televisions, iPods, cell phones or computers.  Your ancestors too had worries but it all boils down to how they survived and lived their life.

I caught this bug called Genealogy when my first child was just months old, he is now 35.  My mother introduced me to Genealogy.  I would look at her and my thoughts were, I need to feed my baby not tramp through cemeteries with her to look and record births and deaths of my long dead relatives.  I humored mom and before long I was in love with "Genealogy".

This week we are hunting for our ancestors.  We don't know where this hunt will take us.  However, before we begin we need to learn how to hunt and the tools we will need to make it successful.  Every week I will be right here talking about Genealogy and how to hunt for your ancestors.  Every week I will give you tips on how to be successful, how to break through brick walls. cga

Continuing from yesterday, Brick Walls

3..Create a chronological timeline of your brick wall ancestor.  You should include every life
event as well as major historical events that may help shed a light on the living situation of your
ancestor.   By doing this step,  you will see gaps in your research.  Get a blank sheet of paper
and write down every year of your brick wall ancestors life and start filling in.
4..Study sideways.   What do I mean by this?  Try tracing the lives of your brick wall ancestors
siblings, cousins, neighbors, in-laws, slave owners, co workers. cga

Love of the Hunt

What are brick walls in the Genealogy world? Are you at one today? As family researchers we all hit a brick wall at one time or another. What is a brick wall? It is a place in our research where we are stuck, can’t go any further, tried everything. What do we do about breaking through that brick wall?
Lets explore a few options:
1..
Write down in story format what you have already learned such as..grandpa was a farmer who lived from ...in such a county and state..he married ..... on ....and had 10 children, get the gist of the story? As you write you will be able to review and organize your work. With this method, you will find holes in your story that you need to do further research on.

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Continuing my Survival Road Trip Kit:
5-  Forms -  Print out blank forms such as: research calendar, research extract, source summary for family information, correspondence record or other forms that you deem necessary to record the information you are looking for.  Check online for other forms like a cemetery form, probate office form depending on where you are going.   Forms keep you organized for when you get back to your room or home so that you can transcribe easily.

6-  Camera (digital preferred)  voice recorder, portable scanner -  when visiting cemeteries it is a good idea to take a picture of the entrance to the cemetery plus any gravesites you find.   Making note of where the grave sites are located is also suggested.  A voice recorder is great if you happen to come across an old timer in the city you are visiting and he/she has lots of stories to tell you.  You can use the portable scanner at the Probate Office to scan wills, death certificates, etc..

7-  Laptop Computer -  In the evenings, if you're not exhausted, you can sit down and sort through all the information you acquired throughout  the day and input the information on your database.

8-  Travel Journal - Keep a travel journal of all your research.   This journal can be a digital or a written one.  You will be surprised at how many times you will refer back to it.

But most of all, don’t get overwhelmed and do too much.   Enjoy the experience.   Even if you don’t get all the information you want, you have had fun at what you love most, Genealogy. cga

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Survival Kit Tips:

1-  Lots of pencils and paper -   Most State and National Archives, college libraries, city libraries do not allow pens.  Always go onto their website and read about what is allowed in their Genealogy Room.

2-  Change -  You will needs lots of change for making copies, parking, refreshments, etc...

3-  Family Group Sheets - These sheets should be filled out with updated information so that you can access dates easily.  Do not take your whole genealogy file with you.   Take only the pertinent information you will need.

4-  ToDo List  - Know what you are looking for.   Is it a birth certificate or a newspaper article?  Are you looking for a local cemetery?  Always make this to do list and follow it so that you don’t get sidetracked.

See u tomorrow for more survival kit tips. cga

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

As we go full swing into the summer months,  are you thinking about taking a Genealogy trip out of town.   Are you planning to go to the State and National Archives, State College Libraries, out of town cemeteries, out of town Probate Court Office?  Wherever you go, you will need a survival kit and be well prepared.  Before you plan this trip however, ask yourself, can i find this information out at my local library or maybe I can order through the local LDS Family History Center, the microfilm I need?  Searching for your family records in your ancestor’s local town or city should only be done after you are sure you cannot acquire the records through easily accessible means.  Do you want to spend the time and money traveling when you can access the information on-line?  After careful planning, make a survival kit. Follow tomorrow as we continue with the survival kit. cga

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Have you ever searched the census and said, what does that say?   You just can't read the shorthand of early census takers..   They used some obvious shorthand, like jno = john.   Does that make sense?  Thos = Thomas.   After 30 years of reading the censuses, I am still learning.

Newspapers (historical) lets you search but uses OCR (optical character recognition)  What is OCR?  Example, type a keyword like Robert Glasgow, and it looks for Robert and Glasgow which, of course,  is going to bring up thousands of unnecessary information and is very unreliable.  If you search twice it will bring up different information each time.   If you are looking for a death notice, use the date and then search within.   Try putting the whole name in quotes “robert glasgow” and hopefully it will bring up only the Robert Glasgow's’ you need.  Just a tip, Newton County LIbrary has access to historical newspapers on microfilm in their Heritage Room. cga

To continue with SEARCH TECHNIQUES, Indexes:  When u get search results and it includes an index, make sure you also check the original.   The index is only as good as the data operator.   For example, a L could be taken for a T.  Also, there is more information on the original than the index.   Don't miss out on important information by not looking at the original document.   cga

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Hello everyone! Happy Hump Day.
Are you having trouble getting the information you need out of your database search? What are the best ways to search internet databases?

Know what your searching.   Learn on the homepage what the database has to offer you. Just about all the databases available on the internet have a homepage and explain thoroughly what it has for you.   It is highly recommended to read what you are searching before just going in and randomly searching.   You can become very overwhelmed and frustrated if you don’t take your internet searches slowly. Doing this first will save you time and frustration. Searching multiple databases at one time can bring you too many results that you have to sift through.   The best policy is to know exactly what you want to search and search that database specifically. cga

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Wow, its Wednesday already.   We are nearing the Fourth of July and going full swing into summer.  Last week on Free Friday Genealogy Question,  I got a great question from Ezri:    Ezri writes:   my grandmother turned 100 when I was a child and I remember a newspaper article about her turning 100.  The year would have been August 22, 1946 paper in either Davidson County or Cheatham County, TN.  Can you tell me how to go about finding that article?
Ezri, great question about locating an article in a historical paper.   First thing is to locate your grandmother in the 1940 census to find out exactly what City and County she lived in.  If you cannot find her in 1940 census because it has not been indexed yet, try the 1930 census.  When you find out exactly what city and county she lived in, the next step would be to see what papers were published in that city and county.  Unfortunately, only a fraction of newspapers are visible online and old fashioned hard work will be needed to find this article.  You can also go to the local library in the city and county she lived and ask to see the microfilm of the newspaper for the month/year the article would be published.   Nashville Public Library (http://www.library.nashville.org) might be a place to start.  The following is a list of available historical newspapers on file at the Nashville Library.
1941-1948
E:6 Nashville Banner
B:8 Nashville Globe African-American
H:7 Nashville Good News Weekly
H:8 Nashville Record
Nashville Tennessean
H:10 Tennessee Register Catholic (Nashville)
H:10 Trades and Labor News trade union

Hopes this helps Ezri. cga

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Morning, more on the 1940 census.   Ancestry.com has all states downloaded for you to search by enumeration district (this means u need to know where they lived).  To find out where they lived or their district you can check in the 1930 census, city directories, 1940 was not that far away, ask mom or dad.  Ancestry has also indexed two states so you can search by name ie. Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

We are still updating you on the 1940 Census release.   Ancestry.com is free till April 10.   They announced that all states will be available by the close of  Friday.   You can check to see if your state is complete by going into Ancestry.com/1940 census.  Just a reminder, the census is not indexed yet.   You will have to know the address that your ancestors lived at so that you can find their enumeration district.   You will then have to go line by line to find them.   Just a few tidbits:   the X by the name means that this is the person who gave the information to the enumerator.  If you do not find your ancestor at the address you expected them to be at, try looking at the end of the census pages.   If they were not home, the enumerator went back and recorded them at the end.  cg

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Its Thursday already!   Hello readers.  R u all happy with your genealogy research?   R u stuck and just cant find a relative?   Remember, tomorrow is FRee FRiday GEnealogy QUestion?   Today, I am going to talk about the 1940 Census coming out in April.   Are u getting excited about finding more information about your ancestors?  R any of you out there helping to index the census through Family Search.   No matter what experience you have, helping out would be great.   Go to www.familysearch.org/1940census.   I am getting excited about the realease.
The 1940 U.S. Federal Census is the largest, most comprehensive, and most recent record set available that records the names of those who were living in the United States at the time the census was taken.
132 million people were living in the 48 Continental United States in 1940.
Tens of millions of people living in the United States in 1940 are still living today, making this a record set that connects people with recent family records.
Many of these individuals are part of what has been called the greatest generation.
These are people who:
  • Survived the Great Depression
  • Fought in the Second World War
  • Innovated technology (TV, Microwave)
  • Sacrificed in the name of freedom
  • Practiced thrift and compassion
  • Understood hard work and industry
The people in the 1940 census deserve to have their records preserved and made available online.

Back to Google for Genealogy - Number range is two dots between two dates.   Example John Doe 1865 .. 1890 will give you results about John Doe between 1865 and 1890.

Link Search - This is a great search.   Okay, you have found a great genealogy website all about your family line.  Lets see who else is interested in your line too?   Do a search using the term Link: and you will get a list of web pages that have links to that site.   Example...Link:www.glasgowfamilywebsite.com.  Note no spaces at all between words.   cg
