WILDCARDS??  What r they and what websites use them?  Wildcards are characters that can stand in 4 any letter of a name.  This catches alternate spellings of the name on most sites.  A (*) stands in 4 zero or more letters in a name and a (?) stands in 4 exactly 1 letter.   Example --  Dumpski can be spelled several ways so to try and capture all the spellings type dump*.  You are hunting not only for the different ways your relatives spelled their name but also the different ways the interpreters spelled the name or interpreted the spelling.  Using the (?) example would be like Rob?rt which can capture robert or robart.  Each websites have different rules.   Before searching, learn the rules of that particular website as to what wildcards are associated with the site.  A few of the popular websites such as ancestry.com uses the * at the beginning or end of the name but not both and u must use 3 letters associated with the name.   Footnote.com you must have 2 letters before the wildcard and 2 letters after.  cg

Filing my research, what is the best approach?  My favorite is by surname in a 3 ring binder, then by couple, divided by index dividers.  If the children are married start a new divider.   if he/she never marries they stay with parents.  You can also use file folder.   Whatever method is easier for you.   Remember to keep up the filing at least once.   Have a great weekend.   CG

Genealogy (Love of the Hunt)

Names, Names, Names, all the same names.   How can I keep it all straight?   Who belongs 2 who?
First, this is every genealogist nightmare but a great question.   Keep a separate chronology for each person's life including any information  that distinguishes them from a cousin, etc.   Maybe a description of their land or tax detail.   If  the wife's have the same name, certainly the children's name are different.  They might go by a nickname such as junior or senior.   However, remember that doesn't mean they are father/son.   It could be two people with the same name in the same town.  To keep it all straight in your head, try using their middle initial or their nickname.

Question?  If people were often named after what they did for a living, why isn't the name farmer the most common name.   Why black, brown instead of yellow and orange?
Answer..Yes farmers were the most common occupation so common that they had to distinguish  another way.   Slaves usually took the name of their masters.   Farmers would take the most common American names such as smith, brown,  Jones.   Immigrants took the name of their homeland like Glasgow.   cg

Genealogy "Searching the databases"

Hello fellow hunters, it is Wednesday again working toward the weekend...Do u have anything planned for this weekend like going to cemeteries, visiting older relatives?  Let me know, I would love to know and maybe help u with some pointers.   Today, Newspapers (historical) lets u search but uses OCR (optical character recognition)  What is that u say?  U type a keyword like Robert Glasgow, and it looks for Robert and Glasgow which of course is going to bring up thousands of unnecessary information and is very unreliable.  If u search twice it will bring up different information each time.   If u r looking for a death notice use the date and then search within.   Try putting the whole name in parenthesis and hopefully it will bring up only the Robert Glasgow's u need.  Just a tip, the library in your town might have access to early historical newspapers.   Try.    Again, let me know how u make out.   cg

Hello Friday.....Weekend is here!!  Searching multiple databases at one time can bring you too many results that you have to sift thru.   Best policy is to know exactly what you want to search and search that database specifically.  If, after doing that, you want to run a search through all the databases, you can.   But, be aware of results and don't become overwhelmed.  Have a gr8 weekend see ya all on Monday.....comment on how searching the databases went!  cg

Genealogy "Searching the databases"

Hello fellow hunters.   Let move on today to how you search databases.   Always check on the  home menu on how to search.   Doing this first will save u time and frustration.   Don't be in a hurry when searching.  A good number of the databases allow flexibility.   Wild cards, partial names, soundex.
a..Wildcards - what r wildcards?  usually it is a *.   Say for example you have the name Robert Glasgow.  To search using a wildcard would be Robert Glas*.
b..Soundex converter is usually with the census.   Censuses workers had different handwritting and sometimes the people didnt even know how to spell their name.  You can also identify the spelling variations for a given surname.  Example..soundex for glasgow is G420.   Some other names that have that exact soundex is gales, galik, gallehawk, giles, gilhaus, gilkey, gilles.......u get the picture.
c.  Part of the name...example Robert would be rob.  Any comments or questions, bring it on?   cg

Genealogy FAQ's "Organization"

Legacyfamilytree.com - this is a software that needs to be downloaded onto your computer.  Standard version is free.
Myheritage.com is a internet based software that is free, private and secure.  You start the software by adding your name.   The software is limited to only 250 names (do you have that many in your tree)   Congratulations, if you do.   They do have a premium version that you can pay monthly or yearly.  Please go to myhereitage.com and start organizing your tree.   You can also add pictures, let others access.   Nice feature is you can download pictures from your cell phone (just like facebook)   and really handy when you are out hunting tombstones or  visiting relatives.  I like this software.  No software download on your computer and it has different reports.   Try it out.  cg

Genealogy FAQ's "Organization"

Hello Tuesday....getting closer to Memorial Weekend!   What r ur plans for this weekend?   I would love to hear from u....R u going genealogy hunting?  Today, r topic is computer organization.   There r a
lot of products out there for beginner genealogists to put their data on.  By far, Ancestry.com is the best.  U can build a tree, add pictures, tell a story about the past..U can search and then add it to the tree, others can search and help u too.  If u r looking for a whole package, ancestry.com I would recommend.   However, there r others out there that r paid and some that r free which I will start to explore.    cg

Genealogy FAQ's "Organization"

Hello everyone, Happy Monday!   Did u all going hunting this weekend?   Did u find anything?   I went looking for a tombstone and didnt find what i wanted so back to the drawing board :))
b)  Keep your forms "handy" when you get home from the hunt.   U should have taken some with u to fill out the citations.   Get some 3 rung binders for the surname and divide into given names.   Put the appropriate forms with the given and surname.   Group sheets are the best.   I personally have a working group sheet and the "final copy" group sheet I know is correct with citations.   Review the sheets often and keep asking yourself questions cg

Genealogy FAQ's "Organization"

"Help" how do I get organized after hunting?  This is a tough question to summarize.   So, I will take it in parts.
A..Always keep your thoughts on the big picture.  When researching,  u can sometimes lose trace of the big picture.   If u had a day out at a cemetery and come home and before u plan another day out, organize what u found out the day before--utilize your forms and fill out all the information -- have a great weekend..Where r u going this weekend?   I am going cemetery hunting.   cg

Courthouse Records - Genealogy Resources

Its Tuesday, good morning!    When did my ancestor get married?  What was the date of his/her birth?  Did he/she have a will and to whom did they leave all their worldly goods to?  Did Jane and Jack divorce?  These questions can be answered at the Courthouse.   Probate court has marriage records, wills, guardianship.  This office is the most significant to us as genealogist and researchers.  Land records can also be found at the county court.   Did Jane own land?   If u r asking these questions, take a trip to your county courthouse and research the answers.   But be prepared when u go with pencils, paper, questions, also get the times they r open and if there are fees involved.   Good luck and if u get a minute, let me know how it went.   cg

Frequently Asked Questions - Cemeteries

Cemeteries r another great resource for finding out information.   However, if u do find a relative in a cemetery please take a good digital camera with u to take pictures of the grave, surrounding graves (maybe other relatives r buried there) and the location of the grave.   Also, take a pictures of the name of the cemetery entrance.  I have been stuck on 3 graves I cannot find in a cemetery that I know they r buried (obit states it).   The caretakers of the cemetery cannot even find them.   Beware, older graves sometimes can be hidden in the oldest part of the cemetery.  Good luck this summer, if hunting graves is on your to do list.   cg

Frequently Asked Questions

Are we all glad it is Friday?  The weekend is here.   Are you going relative or cemetery visiting this weekend?  Today I am going to talk about frequently asked questions from newbies.  We all were new at genealogy at one time.  I know I was and wished at that time there were blogs like this for me to learn from.
1.. What r references? Why r they important?
A..  Resources in genealogy are where u found the information such as in the census, with relatives (please name them) cemetery grave (birth/death dates), actual birth/death certificates.  u get my gist.  Why r they important because it shows the reader that u have verified the information u r recording with actual documents.   It is always important 2 try and verify information relatives give u with the actual documents. Dont forget to record the actual date that u either talked with the relative or found the document.   Have a great weekend and happy hunting  cg

Interment.net

Hello fellow hunters, how is your Tuesday morning going?  Mine is doing well....  Interment.net is another free website on graves.  Remember graves tell us a story of birth and death.   Lets search and see what we get.  Check out the sponsor links also.   You can also browse cemeteries in your counties u r researching.   Have u hit a brick wall with regards to cemeteries.  I have been searching for 2 particular graves.  I know where they r suppose to be but the records show a gap in the date.   I have been there physically and still cannot find them.  I have even, yes a psychic has tried to help, but all she said was they were there in a very very old spot.  Any ideas out there?  see ya all tomorrow.   Post if u r having same problems with cemeteries.

"Newspapers help with the hunt"

Happy Tuesday folks. How was the hunt? Did u find anything out? Ancestry.com usually has a trial period. Did u try it? Would love to know how it went--did u search the marriage index for the male. If u find him, u'll find the female. In my case, I know the maiden name but that is all. Think about her approximate birthdate. Dont get frustrated, dont give up. I couldnt find anything either spelling her name Katherine or Catherine. I found a article in a newspaper of a car accident and they spelled her name with a "C" and her age, so now I got her approximate birth year, husband's birthyear and her 2 children and ages. I got alot from this article. Newspapers give a wealth of information. Happy hunting today! cg

Where do I start?

Its Monday, How was was your weekend?  Did u go visiting--If not, I'll remind u next weekend.  By now you know whom (surname) your going 2 research so its time 2 go hunting.  Today, I want to talk about your particular surname u r hunting.  Whether it be on your mother's/father's side.  First step in hunting is 2 get 2 know something about him/her.  Did u get the birth/death date?  Did u find out where he lived?  Lets explore this a little more....Lets say u know nothing about her.   We r going to use my names as examples.  Katherine Vanalstye Mykel.  If u have access to Ancestry.com.  That would be my first place.  If u dont, try a free online search in google such as Katherine Vanalstyne Mykel/genealogy.  Try to find free search engines for your name.  Tomorrow will talk about what u found.  Have a great Monday

Good Morning friends, again its a rainy day here in georgia.....I hope i have equipped u now with the tools to start your hunt and today that is exactly what we are starting.  First, i want you to get a blank piece of paper and at the top write  your name(remember, if u are married woman to put your maiden name)  that is your full name draw a line under it.....now draw a line down between your name and across like a T...on the left side write your mother's full name including maiden name and on the left your father's full name.  You can write down their dob or date of birth/death if u want.  Being we r trying to find a family to follow (if u haven't decided on one yet), keep following down with your mother's mother/father and so forth.  At this point do not fill in the children yet.  Is it getting hard???  yea, it is?  Work on this today and lets see how far u get.....Have a great day and talk tomorrow  cg

"Start your hunt"

Goodmorning!  I was going to start the tree this morning and such...but u need to get organized b4 u can start hunting.  U will need some tools.  A spiral notebook, pencil (u'll b doing lots of erasing) and pen. Decide where u will file ur information.  I use a loose leaf notebook with tabs that divide and organize my information.  This looseleaf notebook will fill up fast.  A drawer in a file cabinet will be great for extra forms.  You can go on Ancestry.com and they have all the forms u will need to get organized and fill out for tomorrow's adventure into the back of your mind........see u there   CG

genealogy

k, its Monday, March 28, 2011 and I am starting this new blog.  Hope you all will join me in the hunt!  We are hunting our relatives from 100's of years ago.  What fun we will have.  Just a little about me, I have been loving the hunt for over 30 years now when my kids were just babies and have just retired from being a OTR truck driver to pursue my passion, the love of the hunt.

Join me every day for new and exciting ways to hunt our relatives.  I am very new at this blogging, so please bear with me if I make mistakes (and I will) but we all have to start somewhere.  Today is the beginning of a new day.  Join me tomorrow, tuesday, as I start you all on this hunt.
